Roel Pieper
Business Week called him "The High Tech's
Transatlantic link. He serves as the interpreter to
the two richest economies on earth, the U.S., and
Europe".
Roel Pieper has over 25 years of operating experience
with software and technology companies. He was Senior
Vice President of Strategy at Philips N.V. from 1998-1999.
Prior to that, he was the President and CEO of Tandem
Computers Inc., the largest fault-tolerant computer
vendor with revenues in excess of $2 billion in 1995,
backed by Kleiner Perkins. While at Tandem, he was
responsible for a turnaround initiative that resulted
in a trade sale to Compaq Computer Corporation. That
transaction resulted in the creation of over $3 billion
of market value during his tenure. Prior to becoming
CEO of Tandem in 1995, he was CEO of UB Networks,
a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tandem, which provides
data communication products. UB Networks was sold
during his tenure to Newbridge Networks for $150 million.
From 1990 to 1993, he was CEO of Unix Systems Laboratories
("USL"), a company that developed and marketed
the Unix operating system, a former AT&T subsidiary.
While at USL, he drove the first official spinout
from AT&T, which resulted in a trade sale to Novell,
Inc. for $323 million.
Roel began his software career at Software AG where
he spent 10 years in the US and Germany (from 1980
to 1990) during which time he became Chief Technology
Officer of the company. Software AG is considered
one of the earliest software companies in Europe and
at one time was the second largest global software
company. He was formerly a Director of Computer Associates
(CA) from 1999-2002 and Veritas Software (VTRS) from
1991-1998 (venture-backed by Accel Partners and USL),
and several other technology companies. In 2000, he
was selected to chair the restart of Lernout and Hauspie,
representing equity shareholders including Microsoft
and Intel. He was also an early investor in Lightstream
(sold to Cisco), Globeset (sold to Trintech), Seebeyond
(NASDAQ: SBYN) and Tivo (NASDAQ: TIVO). He has advised
the Dutch government on technology related projects.
Roel received his doctorate degree in computer science
and mathematics from the University of Delft, Netherlands,
where he graduated summa cum laude.
Tandem computers, while under the leadership of Roel,
took a minority stake in Indigo Technologies, founded
by Sashi Chimala.
